Before you record your screencasting video best practices with TechSmith (Transcript)

Creating a good video starts before you actually push the record button. Here are a few tips to help you get ready to make your videos. First you’ve got to know your message, think about your goal and what you want your viewers to do. Not knowing your audience can lead you to be off the mark, you don’t want cat pictures showing up in the wrong place. One way to know your audience is to ask yourself the 5 W’s… these will keep you focused and on track. After you work through your audience, you need to consider writing a script. This will help you keep your video focused and concise… stopping a lot of blah, blah, blah… Plus, once the words are down on paper you are free to play with them and make sure they are perfect to your needs. In addition to writing the words, you should think about what visuals are going to accompany your audio. Video is a visual medium, and knowing what you’re going to show before you create your video will save a lot of time and frustration. Once you have the content thought out Start by eliminating background noises, like the humming of lights or ventilation sounds. If you have an office with a door, close it. If you don’t have a door, ask your neighbors for a few minutes of quiet. Last thing you’ll want to do is clean up your computer’s desktop. You’ll want to hide any icons, close unused programs, ensure that your email notifications are turned off — basically if you don’t want viewers to see it in your video, make sure it’s taken care of.
