Designing Your Online Course
As Summer approaches, and you’re eyeing some well-deserved downtime, you might also be plotting to take your course digital or give an existing online course a fresh spin. Why not kick things off with a bang at the EHE Course Design Institute (EHE CDI), hosted by EHE’s DELD? It’s your golden ticket to crafting an engaging, well-structured course ready to wow students in the fall semester and beyond!
This year, we’ve given the program a makeover, and from May 6th to May 17th, we’re rolling it out on Carmen. You’ll dive into a mix of asynchronous tasks and six lively synchronous sessions. But here’s the real kicker: participants will emerge with their very own course plan. This isn’t just any plan; it’s a culmination of all the wisdom from the 6 sessions, serving as your blueprint for developing an online course that stands out, not just for the 2 weeks at CDI, but long into the future.
The mission of CDI is to arm instructors with the know-how to design, deliver, and hit their course objectives out of the park. By joining EHE CDI, you’ll deepen your knowledge of top-notch online teaching strategies, discover a variety of tech tools to make your course materials pop, and learn how to kindle online student engagement and teamwork.
Pedagogy: Engaging Design
Online teaching is a whole different ballpark, needing a smart mix of design and planning to nail that engagement vibe you usually get automatically in face-to-face classes. Picking the right tools is key to shrinking that virtual gap between you and your students and proper planning is the foundation to transforming your course. Let EHE CDI be your guide. After Course Design Institute, instructors can expect to:
- Identify their goals, and challenges, and learn where to get help in building an online course
- Develop effective learning objectives that align with their course goals.
- Select course interactions and activities that promote teaching, social, and cognitive presence based on the Community of Inquiry model.
- Create opportunities for student engagement within their course.
- Apply digital pedagogy skills to increase student learning and engagement.
- Evaluate their course accessibility using the guide.

Putting into Practice: CDI Sessions
Participating in EHE CDI can provide opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of ideas with other members inside and outside your department. Topics to be covered include the following:
- Session 1: Learning Objectives – find out how carefully-crafted learning objectives and an alignment map can help you get your course online more easily.
- Session 2: Alignment Mapping – we will walk you through creating module level objectives from the course learning objectives. Then, we will work on developing a step-by-step pathway to achieving those objectives each week.
- Session 3: Digital Pedagogy- discover how to use evidence-based digital assessment and instruction practices to take your online course to the next level.
- Session 4: Community of Inquiry– review the CoI framework including social, teaching, and cognitive presence and its application to online course building, and discuss course activities, and tools that support the CoI model.
- Session 5: Engaged Learning– discover strategies to spark engagement amongst your students that are not exclusive to using online tools.
- Session 6: Accessibility– whether you’re sprucing up what you’ve got or starting from scratch, we’ve got you covered with the Carmen Accessibility Guide which we use to check off each beginner-friendly change.
Live sessions will be recorded and shared to registrants, so you can catch up on all the insightful views and advice from your colleagues and stay on track throughout the program.
