HDFS 5350 Course Introduction (Transcript)

when you were a teenager was your family anywhere near normal if you’ve ever asked the question like that you are in luck my friend why because this online class was built to answer exactly those kinds of questions welcome to HDFS 5350 families with adolescents turkeys hi I’m Steve Gavazzi professor of Human Development and Family science at the Ohio State University I’m also the author of the textbook that we will be using for this course families with adolescents bridging the gaps between theory research and practice I wrote this book in order to provide undergraduate and graduate students with a user-friendly reference guide to all the scholarly work that has been generated on families with adolescents this course serves as one of the electives for students majoring in HDFS here at Ohio State it is a writing intensive class and therefore it counts as a third level writing course for HDFS majors although there is a great deal of writing the great news is that there are no quizzes or tests now that’s a cause for celebration oh yes and by the way remember that textbook I mentioned the Ohio State University owns the electronic copy of that book do you know what that means it means you don’t have to buy the book for this class it’s available for download free of charge directly through our library system let me tell you a couple more things about this class to get us moving in the right direction in this class I want every student to learn more about our present knowledge in three major areas theory research and practice first theories what are the main ideas we have about families with adolescents second research what data supports those ideas that we have about families with adolescents and then third practice what is it about those ideas and that data which helps inform both our prevention and intervention efforts with families with adolescents David Olson coined the term triple threat back in the mid 1970s to describe those individuals who are familiar with all three components of this kind of scholarly work theory research and practice I want everyone who takes HDFS 5350 to become triple threat students by the end of the course mastering the triple threat model is kind of like winning the Triple Crown except it’s about families with adolescents instead of horses with riders [Music] and on that note we’re off and running
