okay so you can see the recording up in the top yeah I clicked okay okay so welcome to getting started with Carmen assessments and Gradebook I’m Chanel Walker an instructional designer with delld um distance education and learning design for those who don’t know um So today we’re going to be talking about how to create a quiz how to work with question Banks how to create an assignment um Select Grade submission settings and speed grader graded discussions creating groups and rubrics so we got a lot to do today oops if you do need to contact people you can contact UM Katie for teaching and learning Christy for human sciences and me for Edge Ed studies that wasn’t supposed to show up just yet but I clicked on the wrong thing okay so we’re gonna if you already have a Sandbox from last session it’s a good time to have that open now um you can go to your login to Carmen and go to your dashboard and find your your sandbox that we created um in the last session if you already have a Sandbox created go to that um right now I am in my my sandbox course and what you see right now is the um ehe course template but I’m going to go to modules to start adding assignments assessments and um other things to the grade book so right here in modules I’m going to turn off my video so this is the main focus okay so in your modules we’re going to add a new module this module I’m just going to call um assessments add module so in the last session we created modules with course materials readings and to-do list items this time we’re just going to be focusing on the to-do list items so I am going to make I’m going to make an assignment so I’m going to create an assignment and this one is going to be a reading analysis assignment add item and then I can click on that title to go in and edit and what you see here is the assignment summary page we talked about that in the last session so I’m just going to go ahead and click on the edit button in the top right with an assignment settings you have your title at the top zoom in just a little bit more you have the assignment name at the top and then you have the text editor this is where you’re going to put your instructions and set your expectations so when you set expectations you let students know if this is um all the parameters for the assignment so if you you could put your due date here scratch that one um you can tell them how long that they they have like you have a week to complete this assignment I would kind of avoid having a specific date because then you have to go in and remember to change that when you’re reusing the assignment in future what’s the word I’m looking for oh my God my brain it just went blank um when you when you do it again oh my God my brain is not working okay so when you offer the course again there we go there we go future course offerings that’s what I was looking for my brain is slow this morning I should probably start drinking coffee um so you set your expectations so you you you want to have [Music] um any sort of reading assignment if you have the um if they’re working with a peer if they’re doing peer reviews um anything that you’re looking for when you’re going to grade if you can set those expectations in this section that is very helpful for students um you can also we did in the last session you can also upload or attach a PDF in this area so I can add instructions by having um a document that’s already typed up and I can go into my course documents and I can do um I’m just gonna [Music] I’m just gonna grab a PDF in my files it’s not it’s not a instruction one but it is just a PDF so this is a PDF you can attach you can click on link options I’m going to say that this is assignment instructions um and then I’m going to choose preview and line so preview in line it’s check the expand preview by default click on done and then when I have the you have the PDF attached to the instructions down here you have points so you can add your points I’m going to zoom in just a little bit so that way this area isn’t quite so small so you could add your points I’m just going to do 20 assign it group we’re going to talk about this when we get to the grade book and the assignments tab um you have display grade as you can set your grades as percentage complete incomplete points letter grade GPA scale or you can add it as a not graded assignment which is helpful for practice assignments yes do not count this assignment towards the final grade you can add assignments um if they’re submitting papers or first drafts or if you want them to submit a first draft but it doesn’t count as a grade you can always add those types of items to this if you’re having them submit papers that aren’t part of that aren’t part of the final grade you can always check this box submission type so you have no submission and no submission is good if you want to do an extra credit assignment um or if you want to add participation as part of your grade book if you wanted to do participation you could create an assignment you can say that it’s no submission it’ll still show up in the grade book and then you would go in later and add those points to the grade book and then you have one line as an option the online submission type you can add a text entry file upload so this is your your two most common submission types for online you can restrict the file the uploads types if you have specific restrictions you can say you only want Word document files not necessarily recommended you could say you only want PDFs that’s perfectly fine accessibility wise um or you could say you only want MP4 files if you’re doing a video or MP3 files if you’re doing an audio assignment um you can do media recordings you can have students record things online such as an audio response you can have students do a student annotation so you’re going to upload a file for the student to annotate if you upload a reading assignment and you want them to add notes to that reading assignment you can do it this way and then you have website URL they can submit if you want them to submit current events they can submit URLs for different news outlets so or journals link it to a journal or if you have students um if you’re doing an English course and you want them to look up literary magazines there are lots of literary magazines that are strictly online um so you can have have them submit the URLs for those different literary magazines okay and then you have whoops sorry I skipped one one paper on paper is basically the same it’s going to show up in your grade book the same as a no submission type of assignment so you’re not going to have students aren’t going to be able to submit anything through Carmen but it will show up in your grade book and you can go in and you can type the grade into the Gradebook directly and then students are just going to hand it in mostly this submission type is for the summary page to let students know on the summary page that this is something that they’re going to submit on paper so if you were to choose no submission instead of choosing on paper on the summary page it’s going to say that they do not have to submit anything so it could become confusing as far as communication especially if you don’t set your expectations and your directions in the text um in the text editor I am going to go back to the online setting and then scroll down to submission attempts so the submission attempts allows students to resubmit so if you have right now it’s set to unlimited so they can just keep submitting the assignment if they wanted to and trying again for a higher grade or you could say I only want them to be able to do one submission that’s it that’s all that’s all I want or you could say you want them to be able to do three submissions um maybe a rough draft and then a second draft and then the final draft in order to get a better grade you can set that up here as far as attempts I’m gonna go down to one and then we’re gonna go down to scroll down to plagiarism review so the plagiarism review we use turnitin turnitin will um basically scan students essays and compare it to a repository of student work that you may have for from your previous courses um it can do university-wide student Repository it can do it can search the web for any plagiarism that they copy and pasted and periodicals journals and publications so I made the mistake one time of like I was learning I was doing my Spanish class and I was trying to type up a paper um in Spanish and I went to Wikipedia and I basically copied the Wikipedia information and I put it onto a Word document for me to like translate and use in order to write my own paper in a rush on the due date I put my name on the wrong copy and submitted it it’s not good so I had to actually go back to my dorm and print off the actual copy this was years ago before you could just drop it online and it was in person and on paper so the the website content is very helpful with finding things like that and then you also have the similarity report so you can exclude any of the biblical sorry you can excuse exclude sorry you can exclude bibliographic materials so you can say I don’t want them want the machine to check um the titles from their bibliography because all of those are going to be marked as plagiarism because it’s going to be able to find all of the titles in all of the areas like the periodicals journals Publications websites it’s going to be able to find those titles um you can say you could you can tell them to exclude quoted materials or you can keep that unchecked and then it will Mark all of the quoted materials as plagiarism and some of them are going to be like if you did if the student didn’t quote properly it’s going to count that as plagiarism as well um so you have the different settings there and you can exclude small sources um small Publications that kind of thing if you want to but all of these are options for you and then you have the show report to to the students immediately after the assignment is graded after the due date or never um so if you show it to them immediately as soon as they submit it is going to scan their work and it’s going to tell them hey you plagiarized this this and this if you have the attempts available for more than one then they will be able to fix all of their mistakes and resubmit it um and that way you don’t really have to have that plagiarism talk but it’s up to you okay and then you have we’re going to scroll down to group assignment so group assignment you check um oops oops oops okay it doesn’t support the student annotation most of these should be unchecked anyway I’m going to scroll back down so I could check the group assignment box so assign grades to each student individually so each student in that group will get they’ll all get the grade is going to be the same grade but they’re going to get it’s going to show up in the Gradebook for each student or you could say you can grade it as a group set and then you can select your groups and that or you can create a new group so we’re going to talk about groups in a bit so you can either grade as a whole group set or you can grade individually so in the grade book you’ll probably see um this same aside if you’re using speedgrader you’re going to see the same assignment for every student in that group so you’re going to see multiple assignments whereas if you grade by a group set you’re still going to get the same grade across the board but they’re not going to show up in speed Creator as individual students they’re going to show up as by group um so you’ll have project group one that assignment project group two that assignment instead of having project group one student one student two student three in that whole you’ll see the same same assignment every single time so I’m gonna scroll I’m going to uncheck the group assignment and scroll down to peer reviews so you can require a peer review in your assignment um you can manually assign your peers peer reviews or you can automatically assign a peer review so reviews per user you can have them review two of their peers and you can also set that assignment for let’s say they have to review two by Friday and then you can also keep the peer reviews Anonymous so that way students don’t know who they are reviewing but also the students don’t know who reviewed it so if if you have students who have friends in the class they can um they might be a little bit more lenient on their friends rather than rather than um giving an honest review okay so the assign box we covered this in the last session but you can assign to either everyone or to a specific section so if you have the sections of your course merge together you’ll see multiple sections of your course here and you can choose to assign this assignment to one section or the other um or multiple sections and exclude one depending on how you have it set up in your course um the most common setting is going to be everyone and that includes everyone who is in that course course shell or course site so if you have multiple sections in the course it’s going to be assigned to all of those sections in the course due date you can set your due date and time so if you want this to be done by Friday at noon and you can have it due by Friday at noon if you want it done by Friday at five 32 you can have it set at 5 32. you can pretty much type in whatever even if it’s kind of weird um and then you have your available from and available until dates so you’re available from date is when the assignment is going to be open for students to start working on so if I have this set up to be available today it’s going to show up in the course and students will be able to see the assignment summary they’ll be able to click in and start doing their submissions they can submit early and then I have the available and If you leave this blank sorry if you leave the available from blank it’s going to pop up immediately um so it’s going to be the basic the same as if I said make it available today if you only wanted to open or become available next week you don’t want students to start working on it until next week then you can have that available from date to be next week I’m going to leave that clear and available until so you can have an available until date you can have it after the due date so you can say you want it to be available until midnight even though it’s due at 5 30. or you can say they have until Sunday at midnight just to submit a late submission and this will close off access to students to close off access to the assignment um after this specific day and time so students will no longer see the summary they will no longer be able to click the submit option um and you won’t receive late work after that time so that’s pretty handy as well if you leave this blank students can submit even on the last day of classes so you can they can keep submitting they can submit until um you can submit late work until the end of the end of the semester um if you allow that to be available so I’m going to save or save and publish if it’s ready to go so you can see here that it says minimize file preview that means that the PDF is going to pop up here and students will be able to scroll through you can see that the points are here how they are going to submit so they can submit a text through a text entry box or a file upload they’re only allowed one attempt the due date is on Friday at 5 32 and this is available for everyone um and there is no available from or until so they could submit so are there any questions on setting up an assignment before I move on to adding a rubric to the assignment okay so when you create an assignment you have the option to add a rubric sorry I should have zoomed in so you have the add rubric so you can add a rubric directly to the assignment from this page so we’re going to talk about the rubric tools which is sometimes a little bit confusing so with the rubric tool on the assignment you have the rubric title so you can say that this is the reading analysis rubric you also have the option to find a rubric so you can find a rubric in other courses that you’re enrolled in you can find rubric other rubrics that you’ve created in your course so you can see that I have I’m enrolled in quite a few courses and there are multiple rubrics that I can choose from um so I can add a rubric from here and click on this use this rubric button down at the bottom in order to select my rubric and add it to the assignment you are able to reuse rubrics that you create in your course so if you have a rubric for reading Reflections and you have a certain set of criteria that you use in order to create that in order for those students to have a good reading reflection then you can reuse it for your for your multiple reading reflection assignments so I’m going to close out of that because we’re going to create a rubric um directly so we have our list of criteria we have our list of ratings and we have our points so you can have you can add a Criterion to the list and you can add you can find outcome I’m not going to cover the fine outcome part but the ad Criterion so what you have here is you have the by default on this first row you have a default um Criterion you have the default ratings and you have default points so for Five Points you have description of Criterion and range so I’m going to add this or edit this so description of Criterion this is actually what you would call um the Criterion title or category or um subject heading whatever it is you consider it to be so I would say um if you wanted students to have sources for a midterm essay or a sources or a bibliography you can have that as one of your Criterion and then you can say it must be a credible credible source so update Criterion and what makes it a credible source you can add sorry um you have for full marks I meant to hit this pencil icon so for full marks um you can say this is a credible source and it’s a journal publication that’s going to be your description what makes it a credible source so that would be the description there so updated and then you can add more points to your ratings so instead of three points you can say this is four not quite credible and some sources are not from credible sources update your rating you can add more points so this one would be three points um most sources are not from are not credible two points so you have two points which could be mostly Wikipedia so um so student only grabs sources um from a Google search and then another one would be let’s see so maybe it’s from a Facebook post and maybe a credible Source but not proven I know you would probably have a different rating for this foreign and then for zero points we’re going to add edit it and it’s basically Tick Tock so student sourced a tick tock account so there’s no nothing really credible about that and then you have your whole criteria ratings and your points so you’re always able to change your points if you want to and if you want to add more Criterion to yours you just click on the add Criterion you can duplicate so you can duplicate sources in bibliography but you can edit it and say that you want um I’m just making up stuff now um so you want to duplicate it but you want it to be page numbers and a good reason to use the duplicate option is because all of your ratings are going to be there still whereas if you add a new Criterion those ratings are going to go away so if you have something that on that you want to go from Five Points three points zero points and then on another line you want to have five four three two one you can set it up that way but um if you want to use the same number of points level same point levels for each of your Criterion then you then you want to duplicate it makes things a lot easier Okay so once you have those your your criteria all set out on your rubric you can go down to the options here and you can say I’ll write free form comments when assessing students you can do that you can remove points from rubric you can have that oops you can say don’t quote don’t post outcome results to learning Mastery gradebook you can say use this rubric for assignment grading hide score total for assessment results so you can definitely click on use this rubric for assignment grading if that’s what you want to do and you can use it in the gradebook and you can also add free form comments to your rubric so when you’re in speed grader you’re going to see your rubric and you’ll be able to add comments so I’m going to click on create rubric and you can change the points to for the assignment to match your rubric I’m going to click on change so it went down from 20 points to 10 points [Music] um and there’s your assignment with a rubric so are there any questions about rubrics before I go on to making a quiz you’re good thank you okay so I’m gonna go back to modules I have my reading analysis um assignment there I’m going to click on it just so you can see so you have the PDF instructions up there the points have been changed from 20 to 10. the rubric is there and now I’m going to switch over to student view so you can see it from the two oops because it’s not it’s not um it’s not published there we go student view so they would be able to see the rubric part even though it is not actually part of a published module it’s always nice to do student view because then you know when you haven’t published stuff student view there you go reading analysis okay so this is what they get to see they get to see the summary page they can start the assignment this would not be available if it was not published or if it’s not available if you didn’t set the available available from date until a later date so you have this start assignment button you have the summary information when it’s due um the points how to submit the number attempt of attempts they’ve done this is the attempts they’ve completed this is the number of attempts they’re allowed to have so there’s a difference for that you have your instructions your instruction PDF and down at the bottom you have your rubric so I’m going to leave student view now and go back to modules and now we’re going to add a quiz so I’m going to add a quiz add a new quiz um let’s say that this is going to be a midterm I’m going to add that item and like the same as I did with the assignments I’m going to click on the title it’s going to take me to the quiz summary page and I’m going to click on edit so I’m going to do this a little bit differently than what I did in the session last time so you have your quiz title at the top you have your text editor to set your expectations if this is a timed exam if they have multiple attempts if this is a practice type of test um all of those should be here in the set expectations and instructions part and then we’re going to scroll down to the graded Quiz part so graded quiz I’m going to zoom in a little bit more so you have quiz type you’re able to do a practice quiz um practice quizzes cannot be added to the gradebook so I have had instructors who wanted to do a practice quiz for their students so that way they know what the quiz experience is going to be like um and choosing this practice quiz option is not going to add it to the grade book so you can do a graded quiz and you can just make it a low stakes low stakes quiz if you’re looking to give your students the experience and have that be extra points in your in your course but practice quiz is not going to end up in your grade book you have graded quiz you have a graded survey and you have an ungraded survey so if you want to take polls in your course you can do it that way and if you want that poll to be for points you can have a graded survey assignment group we’re going to get to that once we get to um the assignments page options you can shuffle your answers this only shuffles the answer option it does not Shuffle the questions um the questions are always going to be shuffled in Carmen there is no way for me to turn that off so if you do have questions that you would like in a specific order you’re going to have to work with an instructional designer or um to figure out a solution or basically give two quizzes um so you can have a quiz with all of your multiple choice questions and you can have a quiz with your essay questions because if you want students to take it in a specific order like they have to answer this multiple choice question and then explain their answer um you can either rewrite that question so that way they don’t have to answer it in that particular order and they can just support their answer in an essay form um or they can just do the multiple choice question um but you can’t have them do it in a specific order so it’s either create two quizzes or rewrite your question time limit so you can set the time limit for your exams and you can it’s only done in minutes so I’m going to put 90 minutes or let me do 60 minutes because that’s going to be easier later on allow multiple attempts it’s the same as with the assignment you can allow you can allow multiple attempts you can say they have 10 attempts for this um or you can leave this blank and they can just keep taking the quiz over and over again quiz score they could keep the highest the latest or the average so if they’re taking an average score you’re just averaging the number of attempts the latest score means that even if they did better on the first attempt but they did worse on the second attempt it’s going to take the second attempt and save that in the grade book rather than taking the better the better one and then the highest is obviously is going to take the best score out of all of the attempts okay so we’re going to scroll down and you can let students see their grade responses so incorrect questions will be marked in student feedback so you can say they’re going to see which ones are correct and which ones were Incorrect and you can allow the students to see the correct answers for those incorrect um incorrect questions that the incorrect answers for those particular questions um they’ll be able to see it in their feedback and you have the option if you uncheck that they’re not going to see the correct answers they’re just going to see which ones are right and which ones were wrong if you check that box you have the option to show them the correct answers so you could show them the correct answers maybe an hour after the exam or you can show it the day after the exam or you can show it the week after you have the option of showing it at a particular date and time and if you want to hide the correct answers um you have the option to do that as well so only once after each attempt so you could say that they they can see what they got only once um and then it’s going to automatically hide so if they do the attempt then it’s going to automatically hide it afterwards um so you’re able to tell the tell Carmen when you want the answers to be shown when you want the feedback to be shown if you have that unchecked it’s just going to always show that even if they click out of that page they’ll be able to go back and take a look at the quiz and see maybe it’s a week later and they’ll still be able to see which ones were Incorrect and correct versus if you have it checked to only once after each attempt it’s going to automatically hide it if they click out of that show one question at a time show one question at a time is good if you have more than 15 questions in your quiz um 15 questions is a good length for a one page quiz just in case something happens so if there’s a glitch or I don’t know I have a toddler and so sometimes when I plug my laptop in behind the couch he decides to climb behind the couch and then he unplugs my laptop and if I’m at no battery I am I would probably be pretty pretty screwed if I was taking an exam so if you’re doing more than 15 questions then it’s a good idea to have that one question at a time because Carmen will save after each question so if something does happen and the computer does shut off and they have to re-log in um they can go back to where they were whereas if you try to do 50 or 100 questions all on one page um something could happen and they could lose all of that work that they just did um lock questions after answering that is forcing students to keep going forward in the exam um there are some particular situations where that is necessary but I usually recommend replicating an on paper quiz as often as possible online and if your students are taking a quiz on the paper they’re able to flip back through different pages or flip sides and change their answers before they submit before they turn in their their test so I like to keep this unchecked but that is up to you if you’re a specific situation requires it then you can check that box quiz restrictions you don’t really need to require an access code unless you want to we also have the lockdown browser as part of um added security if you’re worried about students taking your quiz who should not be taking your quiz you can do lockdown browser IP filter addresses are only necessary if you’re doing a quiz in a computer lab situation it’s very difficult to filter IP addresses when everybody has their own laptop computer if they’re taking it on their phone um it’s it’s a ridiculous number of IP addresses that you would have to collect in order to filter the IP addresses and it’s a lot easier in a computer lab situation because the IT people can just give you the IP addresses for that computer lab and then the assign to is the same as the assignment I’m going to save this for the moment and what I’m going to do now is different from what I did in the last session so I’m going to go to I’m going to go directly to quizzes the quizzes page so you can either do that from the sidebar or you can do it from the breadcrumbs at the very top left and it takes you to the quizzes page and you have your list of quizzes and off to the right there’s a plus quiz button and next to that are the three vertical dots button and I’m going to click on that and it’s going to give me the option to manage question Banks so I’m going to click on that and we’re going to create a question Bank now question banks are really handy because you can create different question banks for your different quizzes you can reuse them you can find them easily and then you can use them in other courses um if you have a question from one course that really fits in with a different course even though it’s a different topic you can still reuse that question in your in your new course you could just use them all over the place you can import these question Banks um and you can keep your questions organized and you can find them and it’s very handy I love question Banks not all instructional designers love question Banks but I do so right now you see that um there is unfiled questions if you add questions to a quiz directly like I did in the set in the last session it is going to create a miscellaneous question Bank so if you have 10 question 10 quizzes in your course and each of those 10 quizzes have 10 questions you’re going to have a miscellaneous question bank with a hundred questions and if you didn’t add any form of organization to this it can be very difficult to find the question that you’re looking for if you want to reuse it so saving everybody some time later on we can just create a question Bank so what I’m going to do on the right hand side is I’m going to click on the add question Bank button and I’m going to add my midterm question bank for um assess and grade book so that way I know what I’m looking for in other when I’m doing other tutorials whoops what happened I okay midterm assess and Gradebook click on the enter button and now we have our midterm assess and Gradebook question Bank and you can click on the title or you can click on the pencil icon in order to edit and add questions so from here you can add all of your questions it’s not going to be much different from adding a question in uh in a quiz directly so I’m going to add a multiple choice question so right here you have your question this should definitely say question title and what I like to do is this is something that is for searching it is Handy for organization students are not going to see this they’re never going to see this but this is so handy for you as the instructor because this is how you find your questions um what I like to do is I like to have a shorthand so I would have es for an essay question I would have um I don’t usually use shorthand for multiple choice but you can say MC for multiple choice you can say whatever there’s a shorthand for this so that way I know what is what I’m getting ready to what I’m looking for so you can see a question title and some people some instructional designers just copy the question text and paste it into the question title area it’ll eventually cut off um at some point but if you do it that way without this shorthand in front of it um you don’t know what type of question you’re adding to your exam so I’ve had instruction instructors who wanted nothing but true and false question exams or or quiz um so you could take all of the true and false questions that they’ve created from multiple quizzes throughout the semester and only add those questions to an exam so if I didn’t have that true false shorthand it would have been I would have had to click on every question to figure out what exactly it is um so I’m going to do um let’s say this is the day of the week so I use a very descriptive title for the question so if there’s there’s different types of let me see es so I have an um essay question for cognitive presence um teaching presence so what kind of question that is [Music] um link between Section 504 and idea so I have those types of questions in here so you have a descriptor that tells you what the question is about um to let you know like what what that is so that way you know exactly what you’re adding so my question is um what day of the week is it and then you have your answer options so your answer options are going to be that you have and every time you set up a question it’s going to have the top line is going to be a correct answer if you don’t want if you don’t have the shuffle answers box checked from the settings and you don’t change the correct answer here if you’re just going to list the correct answer as the Top Choice every single time it is not going to get shuffled okay so in order for this to for you to have um a to not be your answer for all for um every single time you want to you want to change it so we have Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday since today is Tuesday I’m going to hover next to the words possible answer to the left of that and the Green Arrow is going to be kind of faded I’m going to click on the Green Arrow and that changes the correct answer basically from a answer option A to answer option b so you can do that for any of the answers possible answer options just hover over that green and change it to the correct answer and then for each answer option you have a feedback box so you can give feedback and this is super helpful if you have two answers that are kind of the same and they’re just slightly different you can add feedback to let them know why an answer is correct or incorrect once they’ve completed the quiz so that’s really handy um also down at the bottom you have General feedback so General feedback for the question whether it’s a correct answer you can go with the green boxes for correct answers the red box is for incorrect answers and this grayish bluish box is for is just general feedback um it’s just yeah it’s just general feedback so if you wanted to make a comment if they’ve answered incorrectly or correctly or in general you can do any one of those you also have the option to add another answer so if you have a multiple choice that has more than just the four answer options or you need five you need six you need ten you can add them you can add them to the um to the list the only thing is is that if you add an answer option and you leave it blank it is still going to be there when you publish it it’s going to be a blank answer option so you can just trash the ones that you’re not using and before you click on update question now what’s missing from this kind of so with the question Banks you can add points you can add points to the question bank and when you upload that question bank it’s going to have all of the points but if you you can always override these points based on settings and I’ll get to that in a bit so update question and we’re going to go back to our question bank so I’m going to go up to the breadcrumbs at the very top of the page on the left and click on question Banks and I have my midterm assess and Midterm assassin Gradebook question bank with one question and I’m going to go back to my quiz so I’m going to go back to quizzes over in the sidebar I am going to find the midterm I’m going to click on edit and then I’m going to go to the questions tab instead of settings so question the questions tab you can find it at the top above the um quiz title and you’re going to see details and you’re going to see questions so it’s right to the right of the details tab so for your questions tab you have options you have add new question which is what I covered in the last session at newquestion group and find questions so you can add a question Bank to your to your quiz by clicking on find questions find questions you can go to midterm assess and gradebook and I can click on select all if there’s a long list of questions here and I want all of them I can click on specific questions from this question Bank and then I can add questions so you have this option here to add questions to question group and we can we’re getting ready we’re getting ready for that part but you can add questions okay so now that question has automatically been added to the quiz now we’re going to add a new question group so for question group you can randomize questions and pull questions from different questions question Banks so if you’ve had practice quizzes throughout the semester and you and for your final exam or for your midterm exam you decide you want it to pull questions from those practice quizzes into your midterm you can do that but you can also randomize it for each student so not every student is going to get the same exam based on these these question groups so you can pick let’s say two questions from a question bank and let’s make them five points per question and then I can link to a question Bank so I am going to click on this exit survey that I have access to and select Bank so it down here on the bottom it says questions will be pulled from the bank exit ticket survey questions so I can now create that group and you can see that this is now 11 points at the top so now my exam is now worth 11 points because the day of the week question was worth one and I just added two random questions that are worth five and you can do this for multiple groups you can add another group um these group titles don’t really matter um unless you’re adding a specific question to a group so if you’re going in and selecting specific questions to add to a group then you can have your group titles a little bit more specific so let’s say I want to add 10 questions worth two points each from another question bank and I’m going to add it from my unfiled questions I’m going to select that it says that it’s taking it from the unfiled questions and I can create that group so now I have randomized questions from two different question groups and I also have a question Bank added to this exam so the points have gone up from 11 to 31 I am okay with that and then I will save and publish so that’s how you’re able to use question banks in your quiz any questions about that before I move on to moderating the quiz and speed grader I’m good thank you okay so when you have a midterm exam and you need to create different settings for your students um let’s say somebody needs accessibility settings you can moderate the quiz once it’s published so once it’s published you can go off to the right of the quiz summary page and you have under the title related items moderate this quiz so moderate this quiz you can go in and you can see a list of students there are no students in the sandbox so I only have the test student um I can click on the pencil icon on that student’s name and I can go in and add extra time so if you have time and a half you’re going to add extra time on every attempt 30 minutes yes so that’s time and a half so they’re going to get 90 minutes to do this exam whereas other students are going to have 60 minutes so what you’re doing is you’re adding on top so it says everyone already gets 60 minutes and you’re just adding on the extra one so time and a half is if you have a 90 minute exam you’re going to give them an extra 45 minutes yes I think I’m doing math correctly so you have to add that 45 here rather than you don’t want to put 90 because then you’ll give them an extra 90 minutes in order to do this exam so you don’t want to do that you just time and a half so you have 60 plus the 30. okay and then you can say whether or not you’re going to manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt only if that’s necessary um otherwise if you already have in your settings that they are only allowed to do one attempt or they’re allowed to do multiple attempts they don’t really have this option to unlock the quiz for the next attempt for everyone else um so I don’t really understand why it’s an option here um you can unlock a quiz for another attempt for a student who requests it through this moderate quiz area um you can allow another a person to have another attempt but if you have it set up in general your general settings it’ll follow your settings for your quiz so if everybody else gets one attempt the student only gets one attempt unless there is a specific accessibility need okay so then once that student is done you get extra 30 minutes on each attempt so I do have to tell you a specific issue with this if you have very strict quiz times um if you want a quiz to be available for a live session and you want it to be available at 6 00 PM for everybody and then you want all of the other students who do not get extra time to not be able to access this quiz after an hour this accessibility feature is not going to override that that setting so you have to you have to make the quiz available for everyone so even though you don’t want the other students to be able to access a quiz after an hour you have to make it available to accommodate the students with time and a half otherwise they’re not going to get the extra time that they are allowed to have so I made the mistake one time of thinking that this would override and it does not it does not do that so so for all of the students who need time and a half make your your make your exams available to allow for that time okay if you wanted to give a student another attempt they can you can also do it from here but maybe they updated it recently and I’m not allowed to do that from here I don’t um I will have to figure this one out because I used to be able to add attempts in here and now I am not but also this is a test student so I’m not entirely sure what’s going on um so I’m gonna go back to midterm and then I can go back to I can also go on to here and use speedgrader in order to grade but you can also access be greater from the Gradebook so any questions about moderating a quiz before I go on to the gradebook okay all right so great book Gradebook has it’s kind of like a cassette tape it has two sides it has side a which is grades and side B which is assignments so I’m going to scroll on down here to assignments and the assignment the assignments are the assignment page is pretty crazy here right right but you can see that there are different it looks kind of like the modules and these are assignment groups so an assignment group is basically editing the categories within your Gradebook page but you can’t edit those categories on the Gradebook page you have to go here to assignments which is why you don’t necessarily need it available for students to see in the sidebar it’s really more of for grading um so I can add an assignment group which is not the red button to add an assignment but just to the left of it is ADD group button so you can add a group button and you can say that this is [Music] um let’s say it’s participation and if you have weighted grades within your Gradebook you can you always have to add a weight to your um assignment groups you cannot have an assignment group without a weight so you are going to want to make this um make this resemble the weighted weighted grades in your syllabus so if you’re in your sorry in your syllabus you have an assignment that is worth 20 of their grade that is going to be its own assignment group if you have um quizzes that are going to make up 15 of that uh that grade you’re going to create create another assignment group that is going to hold all of your quizzes because quizzes show up on this page it is not duplicated you are actually editing your categories in your gradebook fun times and Carmen so if you have essays that are the essays you can have one assignment in one assignment group if it’s part of a weighted system so this this is kind of important um it doesn’t have to all be in one category if you want to add weights to your system so if you have you can see here I have assignments and I have 50 of total that’s 50 of the total grade if I wanted to add a weight system to my grade book I would go up to the top right hand corner where you have the add group button and the add assignment button and I would click on the button to the right of the assignment button that’s the three vertical dots and if you hover over that it says assignment settings so you can edit assignment dates from here you can edit assignment groups and you can add assignments from the comments so assignment groups weights this is where you’re going to make it look like your syllabus so you can add you have all of your groups you add all of your groups the same way that you would in your syllabus however that is you’re going to add those groups in into your assignment page and then from this page you can add your weights so you see here that I have a group an assignment group called imported assignments and it has zero percent weight this is not good this will cause glitches within your Gradebook you do not want this you do not want any group groups in a weighted system without any weights so I’m just gonna go ahead and give it a five percent weight and now we have a hundred percent weight and I can save so you can see all of the weights are going to be up on the title part of your group in here you can move your assignments around the same way you would do in modules so if you have let’s just edit this and say that it’s quizzes instead of imported assignments so I’m going to add a quizzes group and I can add my midterm exam to the quizzes group you can drag and drop or you can select on an item and the three vertical dots on that item and you can say move to and I can move it to my quizzes assignment group and I can say I’ll add it to the bottom and move it and then it’ll show up at the bottom of my quizzes group okay now I also with these three vertical dots you can add other options to it there’s the participation so the quizzes group let’s go back to the quizzes group the quizzes group is five percent of the total and you can keep specific scores as far as a 10. so you can keep the number of the lowest scores or the highest scores in this group um you can drop assignments so you can say you can drop an assignment here if you would like and then you can save those are your settings not much really to that one and then if you see off to the right of the title you have the weight and then you have the rule so the rule pops up where it will drop the three highest scores foreign number of scores to ignore for each student not keep each student ignore the two lowest scores let’s save and the rule so it’s going to drop the two lowest scores here in this group which is pretty handy if you have certain assignments that you’d like to drop it depends on how you want your Gradebook set up but this is this is the meat and potatoes of your grade book pretty much so we’re going to go over to grades and your grade book is pretty bare not a whole lot so you have your grade book and you have the and the top left hand corner you have Gradebook and it’s a drop down menu for individual Gradebook Gradebook history so for Gradebook history you can see the student greater artifact start date end date you can see the history of the grades and you can also see the individual grade book so the individual grade book shows you all of the students that are enrolled listed in all of the grades all of the categories all of the weights all of the totals um and then you have the option to view so you can arrange by so many so many things and you can a filter you can filter by assignment groups and you can filter by modules if you want to if you have a lot of modules in your course and you want to only grade the items that are listed under that particular module you could take a look at that um you can take a look at the statuses whether it’s published unpublished graded not graded um and then you can view ungraded as zero or you can have ungraded as the line by default um you can add notes to your columns there’s lots of different features that you can have here um in your view but this one right here that I’m showing you is the classic view and then you have your actions so you can import a Gradebook from a CSV file you can export your current Gradebook View and you can export your entire Gradebook and I’m pretty sure that these are CSV files um I think that those are CSV files I would have to kind of check yes CSV file down here at the bottom okay and then over here on the on the right hand side the far right hand side you have your settings the settings are for your late policies grade posting policy and advanced so late policy you can automatically apply a grade for missing submissions so if you’re missing a submission you’re not going to get 100 you can get Maybe 50 if you didn’t submit or you can say you get a zero for not submissing submitting so any missing submissions can be counted as zero percent automatically apply deduction to late submissions so you can automatically deduct a late submission um by maybe five percent per day or even by hour depending on how strict you want to be um and then the lowest possible grade they can get you can set that up you can keep it as zero or you can stop the torture at sixty percent one of those um so grade posting policy this is very important so you can automatically post the grades as soon as you’re done grading them what happens when you do this is that if you have two students in your class and they just so happen to be sitting next to each other but one person starts their last name starts with an A and the person next to them their last name starts with a w then and if you’re grading in alphabetical order person a is going to get their grade before person W and they are you know if you like if you don’t mind that you can do automatically post grades um but I tend to click on manually post the grades so that way when I’m done grading everybody’s work I can go up to the top of that category and just select post the grades now everybody gets their grades at the exact same time um and nobody’s sitting there like oh I didn’t get my grade yet especially if it takes you multiple days to grade people’s work having to grade 20 25 people’s work last summer um and give very thoughtful feedback it did not happen in an hour you know it didn’t happen so posting the grades manually was my my favorite thing Advanced allow final grade override so you can override the final grade at the end if you would like if you want to boost somebody’s grade because they turned in a extra credit assignment on paper um or I don’t know you can you can override they’re great so you can override the calculation that has already happened within carbon I’m going to uncheck that and I’m going to apply settings so you can see um someone go here and to this random assignment that’s in here and I’m going to click on the three vertical dots within that category and it’s going to pull out this pop-up menu so or drop down menu kind of so you can sort by grades you can add speedgrader you can message students so you can message students who haven’t submitted you can message students who received a specific grade um so you can do that you can curve your grades you can set a default grade and then since there’s no grades to post I’m going to add a grade so I’m just going to do 90. and then I am going to I can post the grades once they’ve been graded you can also go here to a specific assignment click on the three vertical dots and go to speedgrader you also have the option to do that from the assignment level too um the individual’s assignment level so you have that option too it would look like a door with an arrow going out um and that will show you the speed grader especially if they’ve submitted but this is speedgrader so speedgrader is where you can find a you can read the assignment you can watch video assignments you can download their assignments you can give and you’re going to see those assignments over here in this big window whether it is text video audio it’s all going to show up here if it is a file upload it’s going to be over onto the right so it’s gonna you’re gonna see that file upload link on the right underneath the submitted title here there’s going to be a little link to download that audio file then you’re able to type in the points that they’ve earned and then you’re able to give comments so you can also use I’m going to zoom in here because it’s a little weird so you can add comments you can type a text comment you can add emojis you can which is a new it’s a new feature and then you can add a you can do talk to text type of comment if you don’t want to type you can do talk to text you can add a media comment so your media comment can be um I’m I’m not gonna allow the video so thank you Chrome um you can record a video or you can upload a video file you can upload a video file or an audio file um and you can add those types of comments here and then you can submit and when you submit a comment you see your picture you see your comment you see what time you made that comment and students can go in here and respond to your comment I didn’t know that the first time I taught a course and so I wasn’t looking for them to reply to my feedback and then I realized towards the end of the course that they were replying to my feedback um so this just so everybody else knows they can they can reply here and I don’t always I don’t get a notification that they replied to that and so you could check if you ask a student a question and you haven’t heard from them via email um you can check to see if they reply to your comment on the feedback part okay and then up at the top here in the corner you have the number of assignments that are graded out of the number of assignments that were submitted so you have graded and submit graded the graded column here is the ones that you’ve graded versus the ones that were submitted the average score for the whole course you can take a look at that too and see if your class is trending on the low end or the high end and then you have the number of students so there’s one student out of one student so you’re looking at student number student number one out of a total of you could say if you had 50 students and you were looking at student number one out of 50. each student has an assigned number within the course you’re not going to be able to see which number that is um so you can actually flip through this and get 17 3 25 you can get them out of order or you can get them in order um depending on how you have it set up within the assignment to whether or not you you are doing Anonymous grading [Music] so then you have your students picture in the picture you have the student’s name and then you have a drop down menu where you have a list of all your students so if you go into speedgrader but you want to only grade a specific student you can go down the list and choose that specific student um you can also do that from the gradebook and then you have the arrows to go right or left along the line of students that need to be graded so then you have your options and you can sort by student name alphabetically sort by the day they submitted the assignment or you can sort by the submission status needs grading not submitted Etc and then you can also say hide names in speedgrader if you want to do it anonymously and save those settings okay and then I’m just going to click on the Gradebook item and you can see from oh great book individual View grade book please there we go so now I’m back to my classic view and I think that’s that’s it for the grade book I think I skipped over adding a graded discussion though so I’m going to go back to modules any questions about the grade book though okay okay so this is the last thing so discussions I’m going to add a graded discussion I’m going to add that item to the module click on the title the same way I’ve done for the assignments and the quizzes and I’m here at the discussion prompt so I’m going to click on the top right corner to edit and in the text editor you’re going to set expectations and provide instructions that so if you want students to reply to two other students or let them know that they can’t see other students replies until after they’ve posted a reply um all of those expectations should be set here scroll down you have the option to post to different sections so you can post to um specific sections for things so if you have multiple sections in your course you can post to one section can have different a different discussion than other sections um and then you have the option to add an attachment you can add that that file here or you can add that file in the text editor you can do either way and then you have your options here so you have your options to allow threaded replies users must post before seeing replies enable a podcast feed and then we’re going to check this box to say it’s graded once you check the box check the box for graded add to student to-do list disappears because you’re adding it to the grade book it’s automatically going to be added to the student to-do list so once you have that you can add a group discussion which we’ve already gone over in the last session and then you can add your points so let’s say that this is worth 10 points display grade as points percentage incomplete or complete letter grade or GPA scale the same as an assignment and then you can add it to an assignment group so let’s say that this is worth part of the participation points so when you add you can add an assignment directly to a group without um having to go to the assignments page you can also add a new group from here if you need to add a new group to your um assignments page but if you have a weighted system I would not recommend doing this if you’ve already set that up so peer reviews you can require peer reviews in a discussion automatically um you can have them reply to different people the same as an assignment and then you can assign to everyone or different sections and the assigned to is the same as the assignments and the quizzes and I’m just going to uncheck the peer reviews and Save and publish click on student view and what they see when they click on the discussion is that this is a graded discussion 10 points possible and then you have your instructions and then they can start replying okay are there any questions about assigning or assessing or any do you want to figure out how to do a specific type of an assignment not exactly I think as I will be creating along the way there might be some questions that I may be emailing you guys back and forth but for now yeah I think that I’m good okay sorry I need some water okay so if you do have questions um you can always contact an instructional designer so here they are again so for teaching and learning folks Katie is your person human Sciences People Christy is your person and for Ed studies I Chanel M the person so you can always email any one of us and book appointments with us to go over pretty much anything related to your course if you want to figure out how to make a specific type of assignment in your course or you want to go over different question types or you need to review how to make question Banks um you can always set up an appointment with us well thank you so much Janelle for taking our time oh yeah it was great XP and I learned a lot so thank you so much so thank you I’ll see you sometime okay [Music] um
