User Experience Design for Learning (UXDL) Framework 

The User Experience Design for Learning (UXDL) Honeycomb framework offers a powerful approach to designing online learning experiences. By integrating user experience (UX) principles, it guides the creation of engaging and effective online learning environments. UXDL is incorporated into EHE’s Online Standards and Best Practices to facilitate smooth, intuitive, and even enjoyable online learning experiences. 

What is the UXDL Framework? 

The UXDL Honeycomb framework, developed by instructional designers at the Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) at the University of Waterloo, adapts the User Experience (UX) Honeycomb by integrating insights from UX experts and cognitive scientists. It provides guidance for designing online courses, centered on the idea that a valuable online experience should be:    

  • Useful: Effective design minimizes cognitive load. This involves applying principles like segmenting (breaking lectures into manageable chunks), signaling (highlighting key information), and using multimedia to present information in varied ways.    
  • Desirable: Design should enhance motivation and engagement through visual clarity (logical layouts), reflective activities (creating immersive experiences), and humanizing learning (fostering connection and support).    
  • Accessible: Inclusivity is essential. Incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines ensures that courses meet the diverse needs of all learners by offering multiple ways to engage with the material.    
  • Usable and Findable (Intuitive): Online courses should be easy to navigate, with content that is easy to find and use. Intuitive design streamlines the learning experience.    
  • Credible: High-quality design influences students’ perceptions of the instructor and the course. Well-designed courses enhance credibility and foster trust.

Put It into Practice 

Instructors can implement the UXDL framework using a five-step model: 

  1. Analyze the situation: Identify the core needs of students in a specific interaction within the course. 
  1. Determine relevant UXDL dimensions: Consider which UXDL Honeycomb aspects (usefulness, desirability, etc.) are most important to address those needs. 
  1. Connect UXDL principles to student experience: Consider the student’s perspective and anticipate their experience. 
  1. Optimize LMS features: Utilize learning management system (LMS) tools to support the student experience. 
  1. Consult with an Instructional Designer: Consider working with an instructional designer to achieve each step in the process.  
  1. Iterate: Continuously evaluate, gather feedback, and adjust the course design for improvement. 

This process is applicable across various online course elements, including the landing page, course navigation, and syllabus design.
